This summer, it seems like I've been wasting away a good chunk of my time watching anime. But I can't help it! After going through a long drought during the school year (besides Sword Art Online), my craving for some Japanese animation goodness was more powerful than ever, and I've been consuming it nonstop since June, taking occasional breaks to watch the original Skins and Game of Thrones. Here's a quick look and verdict at a few of the shows I've been watching.
Shingeki no Kyojin (Attack on Titan)
Everyone has at least heard of this show. It's been the talk of the spring anime season, and it's still gaining popularity and broadcasting new episodes this summer.
It's beautiful!
Story: The story is essentially set in an apocalyptic world. Giant human looking creatures known as "Titans" attacked humanity and wiped out a huge percent of the population. Humans were forced to regress into medieval like technology and create a 3 walled sanctuary to protect themselves from the Titans. Fast forward one hundred years, and you find Eren Jaeger, his adopted sister Mikasa Ackerman, and their brainy childhood friend Armin Arlert, living in one of the protected cities. The Titans strike again and break through the first wall, Wall Maria, and are bent on humanity's destruction once more.
Characters: The quality of characters featured on the show are a bit of a mix. Mikasa is the perfect example of a heroine who can be completely badass and awesome without losing the ability to be vulnerable and display emotion. She may actually become one of my favorite anime characters. The main character is likeable enough, but I still think he has plenty of room to grow and develop some more. There are also a good handful of other characters that are likeable and have their own set personality trait. However, the problem with the show is that there are too many characters featured, actually to the point where I can't remember which one is which. This becomes a problem when a death occurs. Since so many people are constantly being featured and killed off, I can't keep track of who's dead, who's alive, and who the hell these people even are. Instead of feeling sadness, I sometimes feel confusion.
The Titans are really weird looking...
Animation: Fight scenes look fluid and impressive, and the art style is quite unique, reminding me of something such as Claymore.
Music: This show has easily the best opening I've heard in a long time. The new second opening is pretty grande as well, though I do prefer the seconding ending over the first ending for some reason. The music played during the episodes is quite beautiful as well.
Here's a clip of a group of Japanese school students re-enacting the opening:
Verdict: I would have to say Attack on Titan's strongest quality is its ability to convey how realistic this apocalypse just is. It's not all sugar and rainbows- it displays death and gore constantly, making the threat of the Titans all the more real. The desperation of humanity is evident in the lengths they will go to wipe out this enemy. While not perfect, this show is one of the best anime out right now. Definitely give it a watch. 9/10
Free! - Iwatobi Swim Club
Hot guys swimming? Hell yes.
Free! was actually never intended to be a full blown anime. The very talented Kyoto Animation released a video on Youtube last year showing a quick 30 second clip of a few scenes of a group of male swimmers, intended as merely a promo to display the animation capabilities of the studio. However, viewers loved the premise and characters so much that they petitioned for it to be turned into a show, and voila, episodes began airing this month.
Here's the clip:
Story: The story is simple. A group of four guys who met on their grade school swim team reunite and make a new swim club at their high school. I will warn you all though and say that there's a bit of fan service in this show. All the main characters are male, so put that together with SWIMMING, something that's usually done SHIRTLESS by guys, and well, you get the idea. However, it's not unbearable or overdone, and the addicting story and great characters make this show completely viewable by guys.
Characters: The characters are really a delight in this series. The main cast consists of spacey Haruka, comic duo Makoto and Nagisa, intelligent Rei, rival Rin, and his fangirling sister Gou. As you may have noticed, all of the main male's names are girlish, which is addressed sometimes in the show. Each character, while having their own completely different personality and traits, are amusing and funny in their own right, and definitely keep the show from being a total eye candy, slice of life bore fest.
I wish I could float backwards.
Animation: The animation of this show is simply gorgeous. Kyoto Animation never fails to deliver a show with fantastic visuals. If you've seen the likes of Haruhi Suzumiya, Clannad, Lucky Star, or K-On!, you'll know what I'm talking about. Their sense of detail and coloring is astounding, with everything from eyes, to backdrop, to the characters' rippling muscles looking beautiful.
Music: The score played during the show is very nice, but the songs used for the opening and closing are really where the music truly shines. And that ending in general...
Verdict: Only 3 episodes are out right now, but I can already sense that this is a great anime for the summer season. 9/10
Ore no Imouto ga Konnani Kawaii Wake ga Nai. (Oreimo Season 2)
Based off of light novels and continuing on from the first season, Oreimo is another show that has slowly been emerging from the shadows and growing in popularity.

Story: The setup of this show is what got me the most interested in giving it a go. Brother and sister duo Kyosuke and Kirino have had hardly any kind of sibling relationship since they were kids, and barely even speak to each other. However, that all changes when Kyosuke discovers one of Kirino's eroge games (Japanese erotic visual novel computer games) inside a Stardust Witch Meruru (basically a parody of Sailor Moon and Madoka Magica) DVD case. Kirino turns out to be a diehard closet otaku, and it is now the task of Kyosuke to help give his sister advice and help her with her "life counseling" sessions. This in turn leads to the two siblings slowly reconciling their relationship while dealing with Kirino's secret hobby.
That's like me when I mass order anime crap online. ![:D]()
Characters: The characters featured in this show are probably my favorite cast ever. Besides tsundere Kirino and average, but endearing Kyosuke, you also have Kirino's best friend, Ayase, who seems sweet on the outside, but completely loony deep down. Then there's Kirino's new group of otaku friends: the classic, nerdy, otaku from the 90's Saori, and the dark and gothic cosplaying anime elitist who goes by the alias of Kuroneko. You WILL grow to love these characters very quickly, and all of them are quite developed, with entire episodes being devoted to some of their backstories.

Animation: I really think the visuals for this show are quite pretty and unique. The color palette of the show is very light, reminding me sometimes almost of watercolors. I also like how the characters' eyes are drawn.
Music: The score that plays during the show is nice, though nothing too amazing. Both openings are light and catchy, and I do have to give the studio credit for putting in a new ending song after literally every episode.
Verdict: While the premise and style of the show may seem a little weird and off putting at first, especially to casual anime viewers, I can guarantee you that you will become hooked. Though the ending wasn't very satisfying, 3 more episodes are being released in August to tie up things and end the series properly. It truly is one of the most charming and hilarious anime I've seen in a long time. Just ask my boyfriend. 9/10

I know I gave all three shows a 9, but I honestly thought they all were deserving of that score. Definitely give at least one of them a shot.
